Would You Buy An Indie-Produced No Need For Kaide Comic Book?

This October, No Need For Kaide turns 1 year old.

On the NNFK website and through other means, some people have asked me if I would be coming out with a book or something. So now I have a question for readers (s’funny when you think about it – people actually read it!):

How much would you say is a fair price to pay for a 40-50 page full-color comic book?

Here’s what I plan to put in it:

  • All the comic strips from the first year of print publication (October 2008 – October 2009)
  • A good bunch of original new comic pages exclusively for the book
  • About 3-4 pages of prose-form content, mostly some background about the comic and likely some expanded character dossiers
  • Anything else you’d like to see? Put it in the comments below!

Of course, I want to keep the price as low as possible without sacrificing quality, say maybe Php75-100 (Around US $1.50-2.00) at the most. This price is primarily aimed at those in the Metro Manila Area, but I also want to do my best to make it available for anyone who wants it (additional shipping costs may be incurred of course, but I’m getting way ahead of myself here). But at the same time I also don’t want to run myself ragged by just barely breaking even (so ya see, it’s kinduva tough balancing act we gotta do here).

So once more I must ask, how much would you say is a fair price to pay for a 40-50 page full-color comic book?

Please tell me what you think!

    I’ll buy at least one. Don’t care much for the price. :)

    although i’d like to see some romance…and drama…lol

    yes.

    i think 75 is a steal for that many pages.

    and in color!

    and your comic is actually funny.

    it’s a win.

    @jdsalinger:
    Romance and drama? Heh, I’ll see what I can work out. Just try to keep in mind that you’re reading a comic that mostly relies on juvenile tendencies for humor.

    @dilated pupu:
    I don’t really have much of a choice; higher prices may put off potential readers who are curious but might not have seen the strip in print or here online.

    My [unscientific] basis for coming up with the Php75 price point is that some local comic books that I’ve seen around book stores – about thick 80 pages or so that are in full color but go for Php100-120. I don’t know if those were produced at reasonable prices due to volume printing or the artists were able to strike really good deals with the printer. I’m more worried about how many people may actually want to buy the comic more so than I am about having to print a lot of it to make it reasonably profitable.

    Hi! First of all I don’t think you will earn in Php75. Seriously. Unless you will go for printing like 5000 copies. And I agree, I do wanna see more drama and romance :)

    the usual selling rate for local comic books with 80+ pages black and white is around php90+. if you’re planning for a full color book w/ 40-50 pages, php100-150 would suffice i guess. full color comic books would usually attract potential readers. there aint much of them in the bookstores that are in full color. gdluck!

    @Hazel:
    Yep, it’s lookin’ like that, much. By the way, I happen to have a dinosaur who swills coffee and an obese Australian man with the photo-realistic likeness of David Hasselhoff for a face. I’m not quite sure how I can segue the whole situation into a love story, ya know. In any case, I believe I’ve touched on some elements of drama in the past strips..

    @yasha:
    I’m trying to see all possible scenarios right now; but if there would be one determining factor, I’d like to try and keep prices below P100. I don’t remember where, but some time back I read that any item sold in the Philippines that costs more than P100 requires the seller to issue a receipt. As you can imagine, that would complicate things a bit for me.

    I’d definitely get one if it comes out lol
